On January 2, protests began in Kazakhstan, which were attended by citizens dissatisfied with the sharp rise in fuel prices. In a few days, peaceful actions turned into mass riots with pogroms throughout the country. CSTO peacekeepers arrived in the republic to stabilize the situation.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared January 10 a day of national mourning for those who died as a result of mass riots.
