The Japanese authorities protested to Moscow in connection with the upcoming shootings in the Kuril Islands, said Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers.

During his press conference, he indicated that the Russian side had notified of the planned firing in the area southeast of Kunashir.

"In this regard, we protested to Russia through diplomatic channels. The strengthening of Russia's military presence in the northern territories is unacceptable and contradicts the position of the government", Hirokazu Matsuno said.

At the same time, the Japanese Coast Guard issued a warning about the possible danger of maritime navigation in the area.

It's worth reminding that Tokyo protested to Moscow in August last year against the backdrop of training firing in the area of the Kuril island of Iturup. Before that, Russian Ambassador Mikhail Galuzin was summoned to the Japanese Foreign Ministry to protest over the visit of Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Iturup Island.

At the end of the year, the Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, summoned a Japanese diplomat. The reason was an exhibition dedicated to the southern Kuriles.
