"I support the proposal to join the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics into the Russian Federation", - he replied.

"We are not talking about this. We are not discussing this. We are talking about recognition of independence or not", - Vladimir Putin corrected.

"Yes, I support the proposal to recognize independence", - Sergey Naryshkin agreed.

Earlier, Sergey Naryshkin said in an interview with the MK newspaper that the goal of the current war in Donbass is to destroy the territories of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, drawing Russia into this conflict. According to him, Ukraine's "Western mentors" are pushing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to finally abandon the Minsk agreements and unleash a war in the Donbass.

The conflict in the region resumed with renewed vigor on February 17. In the DPR and LPR announced a general mobilization. Women, the elderly and children are being evacuated from the republics. Earlier on Monday, February 21, the authorities of the LPR and the DPR turned to the Russian president with a request to recognize the independence of their republics. The issue was raised at a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
