The State Duma adopted in the third, final reading a bill that introduces criminal penalties and large fines for fake information that discredits the Russian army, as well as calls for sanctions against the Russian Federation.

After the adoption by the lower chamber of the law, according to which amendments are made to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes, will be considered by the Federation Council. If the Federation Council approves the document, the president will sign it.

The document says that the term of imprisonment for these crimes can reach up to 15 years if fakes entail serious consequences.

At the same time, the dissemination of knowingly false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will be punished by a fine of 700 thousand to 1.5 million rubles (or in the amount of wages or other income for 18 months), corrective labor for up to a year, forced labor for up to three years, deprivation freedom for the same period.

If the crime is committed when the perpetrator uses his official position, or by a group of persons by prior conspiracy or by an organized group, with the artificial creation of evidence of accusation, out of mercenary motives, motivated by political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred, or enmity, or motivated by hatred, or hostility towards any social group, then the punishment may be as follows: a fine of up to 5 million rubles (or in the amount of income for five years), forced labor for up to five years, imprisonment from five to ten years and a ban on engaging in certain activities for the same period.

For calls for anti-Russian sanctions, a fine of up to half a million rubles or in the amount of a salary for three years, imprisonment up to three years, forced labor up to three years, arrest up to six months, imprisonment up to three years with a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles or in the amount of a salary for a year.

Earlier it was reported that the State Duma was considering the relevant law.

Before that, the Ministry of Defense pointed to an increase in the “number of hysterical fakes and outright disinformation” distributed on social networks.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor restricted the media in using sources of information about the special operation, and also reminded about the fines for disseminating false information up to 5 million rubles. On February 26, the department demanded that ten media outlets remove materials where the events in Ukraine are called “war”.
