This will help prevent potential leaks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that Ukrainian laboratories that work with infectious agents destroy any "high-threat pathogens", LiveScience reports citing Reuters. This will help prevent leaks that are possible in situations of armed conflict. WHO also invited Ukrainian specialists to seek technical assistance, if needed, in order to safely and reliably dispose of pathogens.

The appeal did not name specific pathogens that could be used during biological warfare. It is known that in Ukraine, as well as in other countries, there really are laboratories that work with pathogens and toxins in order to understand the mechanisms of their action, the impact on people and animals, and ways to neutralize them with the help of medicine. Ukrainian laboratories are supported by the US, the European Union and WHO.
