Tokyo considers unacceptable Russian decision to stop negotiations on a peace treaty

The Japanese embassy in Moscow said that Moscow's decision to suspend negotiations on a peace treaty is "regrettable and unacceptable".

"The decision not to continue negotiations unilaterally on the part of Russia is extremely regrettable and absolutely unacceptable", - Interfax quotes the words of representatives of the diplomatic mission.

They pointed out that the pause in joint economic activity in the southern Kuriles (Japan calls them "square territories", initiated by Russia, becomes "a strong disregard for the feelings of the former inhabitants of the islands and their families".

- The history of the consideration of the issue of joint economic activities on the four northern islands (Japanese name for the southern Kuril Islands), based on an agreement in 2016 between Prime Minister Abe and President Putin. This decision of the Russian side is completely unacceptable for the Japanese side, the embassy emphasized.

Diplomats recall that Tokyo considers unacceptable the special operation conducted by Moscow in the Donbass, and also "expresses its categorical protest against the announcement of unilateral retaliatory measures and attempts to lay responsibility on the Japanese side".

The same position is shared by the head of the Japanese government, Fumio Kishida, calling Moscow's actions "reckless and absolutely unacceptable".

On the eve, we recall, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia refuses to negotiate with Japan on a peace treaty. Moscow is also withdrawing from the dialogue on establishing joint economic activities in the South Kuriles. The Foreign Ministry added that the Russian side is blocking the extension of Japan's status as a partner of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization in the sectoral dialogue.
