From Russian into Ukrainian: In London, Edgar Dega's painting was renamed

The anti-Russian sanctions war declared in the West is taking on ever more bizarre forms. According to media reports, the London Gallery renamed the painting by Edgar Degas "Russian Dancers" in "Ukrainian Dancers" after Ukrainian artist Miriam Nyem approached the gallery's management. The fact is that yellow and blue ribbons are woven into the braids of the dancing women - just the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Even earlier, the director of the Ukrainian Institute in London, Olesya Khromeychuk, wrote in the German magazine Der Spiegel: “Every visit to a gallery or museum in London with exhibits of art or cinema from the USSR reveals a deliberate or simply lazy distortion of the region as a single boundless Russia; the way the incumbent president of the Russian Federation would like to see it.”

And this is logical, since it is unlikely that Europeans, at least the vast majority of them, are able to distinguish between the nationality of the inhabitants of the Russian Empire.

The pastel of the famous French impressionist depicts a group of dancers, whose performance at the beginning of the 20th century captivated him in Paris. But it is not known what nationality they actually were.

By the way, the gallery recommended other museums to follow its example, since Degas's works from the series, which depicts dancing women, are also kept at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

“The artist is still dead and cannot issue an invoice. Laugh at art historians, too…” - says art critic Tatyana Andryushchenko.
