The Federal Air Transport Agency recommended that airlines prepare for a possible shutdown of the GPS navigation system.

According to Izvestia, the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Dmitry Yadrov, sent a corresponding letter to the general director of the State Air Traffic Management Corporation, Igor Moiseenko, and the heads of the agency's interregional territorial departments, who forwarded it to the leadership of the air carriers.

The "State Corporation for Air Traffic Management in the Russian Federation" was instructed to help the crews of the airliners when the GPS was turned off, the pilots were ordered to immediately report to the dispatchers about anomalies in the operation of the navigation system. For their part, carriers must prepare aircrew for a possible threat. In the event that GPS fails, pilots must be able to establish control over the position of the aircraft using conventional navigation aids.

Disabling Russia from the GPS system was considered by Washington as part of the next package of sanctions. According to the head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin, it is technically difficult to implement this, and the national GLONASS system is able to ensure the accuracy of the navigation signal.
