Washington handed over intelligence data to Kiev, which was used to strike at the Russian military, writes The New York Times, citing senior US officials.

The information in question includes expected movements of Russian troops, the source said. In addition to these data, the Armed Forces of Ukraine also uses data from its own intelligence. Information about the movements of high-ranking Russian officials and US commanders is not being passed on to Ukraine. Previously, Washington feared an escalation of the crisis from Russia and did not give out much of the intelligence about the hostilities to Kiev.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby declined to elaborate on providing intelligence to Ukraine, but said the US was passing information to Ukrainians "that they can use to defend themselves".
