President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko approved amendments to the Criminal Code, which provide for the death penalty for an attempt to commit a terrorist act.

"As an exceptional measure of punishment, it is allowed to use the death penalty - execution (until the death penalty is abolished) for the crimes provided for in part 2 of article 124, part 3 of article 126, part 3 of article 289 and part 2 of article 359 of this Code, or for those associated with intentional deprivation human life under aggravating circumstances, some other especially serious crimes", - it is said in the document published on the national legal portal.

This refers, in particular, to terrorism against a representative of a foreign state or an international organization; acts of terrorism committed by an organized group, or with the use of atomic energy facilities, the use of radioactive substances, potent, toxic chemical or biological substances, or associated with the murder of a person; murders of statesmen or public figures committed in connection with state or public activities.

Prior to the amendments to the Criminal Code, in Belarus, the death penalty could not be imposed for the preparation of crimes or "an unfinished crime." The changes will take effect ten days after the official publication.

It's worth reminding that in April of this year, deputies of the lower house of the parliament of Belarus approved the changes proposed by the authorities to the Criminal Code, toughening up to the death penalty for attempted terrorist attacks. To date, Belarus is the only country in Europe where the death penalty is applied.
