While delivering hardware to customers was a problem for Starlink, Elon Musk now claims that everything needed to connect to it will be delivered to customers “immediately.”

Whereas at the start of this year only 25 countries supported satellite internet connectivity via Starlink, that number has now grown to 32. The company is working hard to reach most regions around the world with a $599 satellite internet starter kit with an ongoing monthly fee of $110 for a high-speed connection. In April, Starlink announced the availability of a roaming connection, allowing those who are on this network to be able to connect to it in any region of the planet where it is available.

Already today, Starlink provides high-speed broadband Internet access with low latency around the world. Within each coverage area, orders are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Using state-of-the-art satellites in low orbit, Starlink enables video calls, online gaming, streaming and other high data rate activities that were not possible with satellite Internet until now. Users can expect download speeds ranging from 100Mbps to 200Mbps, with latency as low as 20ms in most locations.

The Starlink Internet works by sending information through satellites, making it much faster than fiber optic cable and reaching far more people and places. While most satellite internet services today are provided by individual geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at a distance of about 35,000 km, Starlink is a constellation of several satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at a distance of about 550 km, and thus cover the entire Earth. Because Starlink satellites are in low orbit, the round-trip data transfer time between the user and the satellite, also known as latency, is much less than satellites in geostationary orbit. This allows Starlink to provide services such as, for example. online games that are not normally possible on other satellite broadband systems.
