New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in the city due to a nationwide shortage of infant formula.

“The lack of infant formula across the country has caused unimaginable pain and anxiety to families across New York, and we must act now. This emergency executive order will help us crack down on any retailer that wants to capitalize on this crisis by raising the price of this essential item. Our message to struggling mothers and families is simple: our city will do everything it can to help you through this difficult time", - Adams said in a statement on the New York Mayor 's website.

The announcement on the mayor's website said that interdepartmental efforts will be directed to ensure a stable supply of infant formula to the city's families. As follows from the mayor's statement, the authorities of the "Big Apple" also intend to deal with rising prices and speculators.

“As a New York consumer protection agency, we are committed to ensuring that retailers do not take advantage of this nationwide formula shortage for their own financial gain”, - said New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Welfare Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga.

According to the text of the statement, 40% of large US retailers do not have stocks of infant formula, and in some states the situation looks even worse. The reason for the shortage in the US market is the suspension of production at Abbott Nutrition, one of the largest suppliers of infant formula in the country. Pathogenic bacteria were found in the company's products, which caused the death of two children.
