The British consulting firm Maplecroft has calculated a risk index (Cities@Risk) for the world's major cities and compiled lists of the most dangerous and safest of them. Risks were assessed in four key components: crime, civil unrest, armed conflict and terrorism. In total, 579 urban centers with a population of more than 1 million people were included in the ranking.

Residents in 22% of the world's largest cities are at high or extreme risk due to a combination of all these problems. More than 75% of cities have high or extreme risk scores for at least one indicator. The top 100 dangerous cities included 33 cities from North and South America, 33 from Africa, 19 from Asia, 14 from the Near and Middle East and one from Europe.

The most criminogenic cities in the United States named Baltimore (51st), Memphis (59), Jacksonville (70). Several of the most disadvantaged cities are in South Africa: Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The safest region in the world is East Asia. The top ten safest places are the Japanese cities of Shizuoka-Hamamatsu, Sendai and Hiroshima, and Swiss Zurich. The top 20 most prosperous included such European cities as Oslo, Porto, Dublin, Rotterdam and Stockholm.
