Media: EU plans to fine social networks for deepfakes

This follows from the updated EU code of practice on combating disinformation, which Reuters cites. The European Commission is going to publish this document on Thursday, June 16. The signatories of the document will commit to combat fake accounts, misleading advertising and deepfakes, and ensure greater transparency in political advertising. In addition, they will be able to take measures in this area within six months.

The updated code says that in this way "manipulative behavior in services" will be excluded.

It's worth reminding that earlier deepfake technology was owned only by experts in artificial intelligence, as well as special effects. It is now easier to create fake videos with the latest programs. Deepfake (from the words "deep learning" - deep learning and "fake" - fake) is a synthesis of AI images of people. The program analyzes a huge number of photos, learns how a certain person can move and look. From photos, AI makes a video.

Note that scientists from University College London called deepfakes one of the main threats to humanity. They ranked 20 different ways in which AI can serve criminal purposes. The rating was based on the following filters: 1) the scale of the disaster caused, 2) the amount of criminal proceeds, 3) the ease of creation and use, and 4) survivability.
