As already stated in the National Electoral Council, Petro from the socialist coalition "Historical Pact" became the elected president of the republic. Petru's closest rival, Rodolfo Hernandez, received 47.31%. He admitted his defeat.
Recognized the victory of Petro and the current president Ivan Duque. He invited the successor to discuss the transfer of power. Petro was congratulated on the victory of the head of Argentina, Mexico, Bolivia, Venezuela, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, Cuba and the United States.
The President elected for a term of four years. The inauguration of the new leader of the country is scheduled for August 7.
Note that Petro (the former mayor of the Colombian capital of Bogota) promised voters to focus on the problem of ecology and climate change. In addition, he considers it important to reduce Colombia's dependence on food imports and support local producers. He also promised to increase spending on education, ensure gender equality at all levels and in all branches of power.
As for foreign policy, Petro emphasizes the return of the once severed diplomatic relations with Venezuela. He also wants to establish free trade with the United States. He calls production the main "wealth of the nation", emphasizing that, having ensured its growth, it will be possible to redistribute this wealth "for the sake of equality in society."
By the way, Petro's victory means that for the first time in the history of Colombia the leadership of the country will pass to the left political forces. For many years they were close to the partisan movement in the republic. Francia Marquez, 40, a black feminist, became vice president.
