The editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, sold his Nobel Peace Prize medal for more than $100 million. All money will go to UNICEF to help Ukrainian refugee children.

Bidding for the sale of Muratov's Nobel medal took place on World Refugee Day, June 20, at the New York Times media center in Washington.

For the award, exhibited at the Heritage Auction site at a starting price of 550 thousand dollars, they got almost twice as much - 103.5 million dollars, RIA Novosti notes.

Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. Together with him, the Filipino journalist Maria Ressa became the owner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The award ceremony took place in Oslo, Norway.

Dmitry Muratov announced his desire to sell the medal in March of this year - after the military special operation of the Russian Federation began on the territory of Ukraine. Then he also indicated that the proceeds would go to help the Ukrainians. The journalist offered to respond to auction houses, "which will put up for auction this world-famous award".

On June 1, 2022, he announced a tender to transfer the proceeds for her to refugees from Ukraine.

UNICEF, where Muratov will transfer all the proceeds, will provide assistance to Ukrainian refugee children who are now in Poland, Russia, Germany, Moldova, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

According to Muratov, if the money turns out to be more than required, then UNICEF can distribute part of the funds in favor of refugee children in Africa and Laos.

Muratov called on other people around the world to support his undertaking.

“We want there to be a flash mob to fight injustice, so that people put up their relics for auction to help others”, - Dmitry Muratov said.
