The main event of the mathematical world - the International Congress of Mathematicians takes place every 4 years. This is the most significant meeting in the field of fundamental and applied mathematics in the world and one of the oldest scientific congresses. Its goal is to present the widest possible range of modern mathematics, including all scientific directions and mathematical schools from different regions, and thus determine the future directions of development of mathematics.

The awards of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) are traditionally awarded at the opening of the congress. The Leelavati Prize is the International Mathematical Union's award for outstanding contributions to the popularization of mathematics. This award was first presented in 2010. The name of the prize is the same as the title of the first of the four parts of the treatise Siddhanta Shiromani (Crown of Learning), which served as the main textbook on mathematics in South Asia until the 20th century.

*“One of the riches of Russia is the traditions of mathematical education and popularization of mathematics that developed in the 20th century. The very existence of the prize for contribution to the popularization of mathematics from the International Mathematical Union shows how significant this is in the modern world. And the awarding of the Lilavati Prize this year to the projects of the laboratory of the Steklov Institute speaks of the contribution of the Russian mathematical community, the guys from our team to this important matter*”, - said **Nikolay Andreyev** at the award ceremony.

Nikolay Andreyev has also received awards in Russia. In 2010, he received the Russian Presidential Prize in the field of science and innovation for young scientists, his work was also awarded the gold medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2017.

The scientist was born on February 5, 1975 in Saratov. Graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. Since 2000 he has been working at the Steklov Mathematical Institute . Nikolai Andreev created the site "Mathematical Etudes", where popular science stories about modern problems of mathematics are posted. Nikolay Andreyev continues to popularize modern mathematics in an original way by his predecessors, from Yakov Perelman to Vladimir Arnold.
