Truss announced her desire to become the new British prime minister in an opinion piece published on the website of The Daily Telegraph.
Truss pointed out that Britain today faces many challenges related to China and Russia. Truss consistently criticizes the position of the Russian Federation in connection with the conduct of a military special operation on the territory of Ukraine and advocates the continuation of sanctions pressure against the Russian Federation for the sake of the speedy end of hostilities.
“There are less than two years left to prepare for the next elections. It will be a difficult confrontation, but one that can be won by keeping promises to the British people. I put forward my candidacy because I can lead people, keep promises and make difficult decisions”, - TASS news agency quoted Truss as saying.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promised that if she is elected prime minister, she will reduce taxes for the people and businesses that have suffered from inflation. She wants to reduce the number of officials and abandon the practice of excessive government interference in people's lives.
Political analysts believed that British Defense Minister Ben Wallace could compete with Truss in the race for the premiership, but he refused to participate in the election campaign.
Liz Truss is 46 years old, she has been a member of the Cabinet of Ministers for 10 years, and has been in charge of the diplomatic department since September 2021. Truss was born into a large family of a university mathematics professor and a nurse. She was the eldest of four children. She graduated from public school, then Oxford, where she studied philosophy, politics and economics. There, at the age of 20, she became interested in politics, contrary to the position of her father, supporting the conservatives. Truss then worked in telecommunications, in the oil and gas sector, and was deputy head of the Reform think tank. After two failures, she won the election in 2006, entering the council of the London Borough of Greenwich, and then got into the lists of promising candidates for parliament. In 2012, Truss received the post of junior deputy minister of education, and two years later she headed the Ministry of Agriculture, and two years later, being an ardent supporter of Brexit, she became the head of the Ministry of Justice. In 2019, Truss supported Johnson's candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party, although she originally planned to run herself.
Truss is married to accountant Hugh O'Leary and the couple have two teenage daughters.
Truss will have to face experienced politicians in the fight for the premiership.
On July 9, the new British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadeem Zahavi, announced his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Earlier, Grant Shapps, head of the British Ministry of Transport, announced his intention to nominate his candidacy for this position.
Boris Johnson stepped down after a series of scandals that saw more than five dozen ministers and senior officials leave their posts. Politicians expressed distrust towards the prime minister, disagreement with his actions and methods. The reason for this was the scandal around the former Deputy Foreign Minister for European and US Affairs Christopher Pincher. Politicians accuse Johnson of knowing about the problems in Pincher's past, in particular, about sexual harassment, but appointed him anyway.
