On Tuesday, July 12, Rospotrebnadzor officially announced that the first case of monkeypox had been confirmed in Russia. According to Novye Izvestia, the first Russian who fell ill was a resident of St. Petersburg who visited Lisbon.

Three sources of Novye Izvestiya confirm that the man, who had a confirmed infection, visited two European countries - Portugal (he spent 3 days in Lisbon) and Estonia, through which he had transit to St. Petersburg.

In the official report of Rospotrebnadzor dated July 12, it is reported that the disease was detected in a young man who returned from a trip to Europe and applied to a medical facility with a characteristic rash. The patient himself turned to the doctors, discovering a characteristic rash.

Doctors indicated that the disease in a young man is mild, there is no threat to his life. Now he is in isolation in medorgonization. “The circle of contacts of the sick person during his stay in Russia was limited”, - the ministry said.

An outbreak of monkeypox has occurred in a number of countries around the world since May 7 this year. As of July 11, more than 9,000 cases of infection have been identified in 59 non-endemic countries and territories.
