Figure of the day: less than 1% of the stolen money was reimbursed to Russian victims of bank fraud

Despite enhanced measures to combat telephone scammers, the proportion of citizens affected by them is almost not decreasing.

The Central Bank published the Review of Information Security Incident Reporting in Funds Transfers . This review is an extremely interesting statistical report on the state of such a burning area for many Russians as bank fraud, or, as it is called in bureaucratic parlance, "operations without the consent of customers."

Among other things, it says:

“In the second quarter, fraudsters committed 10.8% less theft of funds than in the same period last year — 211.2 thousand. The total amount of damage decreased by 5.5% to 2.8 billion rubles.

From the end of February to April, inclusive, the activity of intruders has noticeably decreased, but since May, there has been an increase in the number of their calls and mailings.

In April-June, the Bank of Russia initiated the blocking of 117.6 thousand phone numbers of fraudsters, which is almost ten times higher than the same period last year. The number of fraudulent sites against which blocking was initiated increased by more than one and a half times…”

There seems to be a reason for optimism, but it is very modest, according to economist Dmitry Prokofiev :

“Yes, the number of wires for “legal entities” has noticeably decreased, but for “individuals” - not especially.

But something else hooked me - in the reports of the Central Bank on the amounts of money stolen by fraudsters through various channels, there is such a column "Share of social engineering,%". Well, it's when you get a call from the "security service" and offer to transfer money to a "secure account"

This share is different - for "remote banking" of individuals, for example, 80%, for other scam options - less.

But not 100%. That's interesting - other frauds, forgive "operations without the consent of the client", which are "without social engineering", how is it? Just give me money? Or something else?

Yes, and one more thing - the percentage of refunds for "transactions without consent" is decreasing, and for "individuals" deceived through the channels of "remote banking" - it is minimal, less than 1% of the amount stolen. Take care of yourself…"
