On the International Day against Nuclear Tests, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged on his Twitter the world community to permanently abandon nuclear weapons.

- Our world has been a hostage of nuclear weapons for a long time. These death devices guarantee neither victory nor safety, they are only meant to destroy. Let's ensure that testing ceases forever and send nuclear weapons to the archives of history once and for all," Guterres wrote.

Recall that the permanent members of the UN Security Council - Russia, the United States, France, Britain, as well as India, Israel, North Korea and Pakistan have nuclear weapons.

At the beginning of the month, a representative of the Russian delegation, Alexander Trofimov , said at the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons that Moscow was not considering the possibility of using nuclear weapons during a special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss, who nominated her candidacy for the post of Prime Minister, announced that the use of nuclear weapons if necessary is an important duty of the head of government, and confirmed her readiness for this.
