Armenia will turn to Russia for help amid the escalation of the conflict with Baku, the country's Security Council decided, the meeting of which was convened on the night of September 13 due to shelling from the Azerbaijani side.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President Vahagn Khachatryan and head of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan. They discussed measures to counter "Azerbaijan's aggressive actions against the sovereign territory of Armenia that began at midnight."

The Armenian authorities will ask Moscow to use the provisions of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Yerevan will turn to the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the UN Security Council because of "aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia."

At night, Pashinyan called Russian President Vladimir Putin, reporting on the aggressive actions of the Azerbaijani military and calling such steps inapplicable.

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, at midnight the Azerbaijani Armed Forces opened fire on Armenian positions in the direction of Goris, Sotk and Jemkur. Artillery and small arms of large caliber were fired, drones were used.

Baku stated that there were clashes with Armenian sabotage groups on the border, which attempted to mine the positions of the country's armed forces.

At the end of August, we recall, the Azerbaijani military occupied the city of Lachin and the settlements of Zabukh and Sus in the Lachin region in Nagorno-Karabakh. Previously, Russian peacekeepers were in these settlements.

In November 2020, Azerbaijan concluded a peace agreement with Armenia, according to which the military remains in their positions, and five more regions of this territory pass under the control of Azerbaijan. Control over the Lachin region officially passed to the Azerbaijani military, but until now there were Armenian forces present there. Armenian troops will be withdrawn from Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2022, and the security of the region will be provided by the local defense army and peacekeepers of the Russian Federation.
