Moscow demands from the UN to begin arbitration due to the failure of the US to issue visas to diplomats

The Russian delegation has not yet received a U.S. visa to attend the UN General Assembly session, senior embassy adviser Sergey Leonidchenko said. It will be possible to solve the problem only with the intervention of UN Secretary General António Guterres - it is necessary that he begin the arbitration procedure.

Leonidchenko called Washington's steps "systematic deliberate non-fulfillment" of international legal obligations. According to the diplomat, the only solution to the problem is "the immediate launch by the Secretary General of the arbitration procedure provided for in section 21 of the agreement on central institutions", - writes TASS.

The United States does not want to resolve the issue "not only within a reasonable and limited time frame, as provided for by the resolutions of the General Assembly, but also in principle". The head of the Russian delegation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, also did not receive a visa. Currently, 34 employees of the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN (and 43 members and families) are awaiting visa extensions and are currently unable to return to Russia.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, who is part of the delegation, specified that the American side "has documentary obligations not to interfere with the work of delegates of UN member countries and relevant UN bodies."

- Our diplomats in New York are working on this problem. Some of the journalists who accompany the delegation have received visas, while others have not yet, Zakharova said .

Recall that the high-level week of the UN General Assembly will be held in New York from September 20 to 26 and involves the full-time participation of all delegations, including the Russian one, headed by Sergey Lavrov.
