The decision of the constitutional council of Kazakhstan indicated that the proposed amendments to the country's basic law to introduce a one-time presidency for a period of seven years instead of five are in line with the constitution.

On September 12, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev asked the Constitutional Council to check this proposal of the deputies for compliance with the basic law.

"Recognize the draft law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On amendments and additions to the constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan" as corresponding to the constitution", - it is said on the Council's website.

The decision states that "the proposal to establish a one-time seven-year term of the presidential mandate corresponds to the logic of the constitutional novels adopted on June 5 this year at the republican referendum, aimed at preventing the monopolization of state power".

On September 1, Tokayev proposed holding snap presidential elections this fall and revising the presidential term to a single term of seven years. In addition, the president ordered a one-time amnesty in the country for participants in the January events, which he announced in an address to the nation. In particular, mitigation of punishment is provided for persons who have not committed serious crimes.
