Tesla cars will be smarter than humans by 2033, analysts predict

Elon Musk's company uses microchips that increase their capabilities by 486% per year.

By 2033, the Tesla car microchip will outperform the human brain, according to the Washington Examiner. This was shown by a study by the Vanarama company, which is engaged in car leasing. After reviewing previous and current Tesla microchips, Vanarama analysts found that their capabilities are growing by 486% annually.

This year, Elon Musk's company is set to release a new D1 chip, which should be a key part of the Autopilot self-driving system. It will be able to process 362 trillion operations per second. For comparison, the human brain is capable of performing one quadrillion operations per second (1 followed by 15 zeros).

The previous Tesla chip, released in 2019, Hardware 3, performed 144 trillion operations per second. And the very first chip, used six years ago by Nvidia, could handle 72 trillion operations. That is, D1 will be 30 times more powerful than the very first device.

Based on this rate of growth, analysts estimate that it will take Tesla 17 years for its car chip to reach the intelligence level of a mature human brain (it takes 25 years for humans). If the processing power of the current microchip is 36% of the human brain, then the device that will appear by 2033 will surpass human intelligence.

“It is reasonable to assume that within our lifetime, technology will become significantly smarter than humans,” Vanarama said in a statement. “Modern microchips are able to work in the same way as the synapses of the brain, and researchers are developing new models inspired by the mechanisms of the brain.”
