The European Union lifted sanctions against Viktor Yanukovych for embezzlement of public funds

The Council of the European Union removed former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych (pictured) and his son Oleksandr Yanukovych from the "black list" for "misappropriation of Ukraine's public funds or abuse of office".

The corresponding decision is registered in the official journal of the EU.

We are talking about the restrictive measures introduced against Yanukovych back in 2014. However, the sanctions will remain under another restrictive EU regime. Also, the restrictions were lifted from the former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Pshonka and his son Artem Pshonka.

It's worth reminding that sanctions against the ex-Ukrainian leader were introduced because of a criminal case on embezzlement of public funds.

On August 4 this year, the EU announced new restrictive measures against former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych and his son. Now both are banned from entering the territory of the EU countries. In addition, all their assets in the EU will be blocked, if any.

A court in Kyiv allowed Yanukovych's arrest for signing the Kharkiv Accords in 2010, allowing the deployment of Russia's Black Sea Fleet in Crimea for 25 years. The ex-president is suspected of treason.
