US senators are trying to get Russia recognized as a sponsor of terrorism, bypassing the State Department

A bill recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism was introduced by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal. Thus, US senators are trying to push the initiative bypassing the State Department, which has the prerogative of making such decisions.

According to Politico, US senators have introduced a bill recognizing Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” At the same time, the Biden administration and the US State Department have previously opposed such a move.

“We are well aware that the administration has a different view on this issue. With all due respect, I disagree", -Blumenthal told reporters during a press conference.

In July, five members of the House of Representatives submitted a resolution calling on the State Department to include Russia on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi threatened Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that if the State Department does not put the Russian Federation on this list, then Congress will achieve this.

Then the Biden administration expressed concerns about a possible severance of business and diplomatic relations between countries, some of which, despite the sanctions, are still maintained.

At the moment, the US list of countries sponsoring terrorism includes Syria, Iran, North Korea and Cuba.
