The head of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society and human rights (HRC), Valery Fadeyev, supported the initiative to increase the military age of naturalized citizens from 27 to 45-50 years.

He noted that this does not imply the immediate mobilization of persons who have received Russian citizenship.

Earlier, a member of the HRC Kirill Kabanov proposed to increase the age of naturalized citizens. He said that the Council would prepare appropriate proposals, according to which people from Central Asian countries who received Russian citizenship would be required to do military service in the ranks of the RF Armed Forces for one year.

“The topic of mobilization is, of course, very sensitive for society; there is an extremely high demand for fairness and transparency of the procedure. One of the frequently heard claims concerns labor migrants and other citizens who arrived in Russia and received citizenship. According to the current legislation, if they are over 27 years old, then they are not subject to conscription for military service, and, therefore, they cannot receive a military registration specialty and get into the reserve”, - commented Fadeyev, quoted by the HRC press service.

He appealed to the Constitution, noting that the duty and duty of a citizen is to protect the Fatherland, regardless of the method of obtaining citizenship: by birth or by naturalization.

“It is necessary to fill this legal gap and consider the possibility of increasing the military age of naturalized citizens to 45 or 50 years”, - the head of the HRC believes.

He further cited Israel as an example, where persons undergoing repatriation, after a year of settlement, are sent to the Israeli army, regardless of age and gender.

“I think that similar mechanisms can be introduced in our country. We are not talking about the immediate mobilization of naturalized foreigners - that would be discrimination”, - he said.

In the near future, consultations will be held with the relevant committees of the State Duma and the Federation Council, as well as with the main legal department of the Russian Defense Ministry.
