Catalonia intends to hold a new independence referendum

30 сентября 2022, 11:33
The head of the government of Catalonia, Pere Aragones, said that the Spanish authorities should allow a mandatory referendum on the potential independence of the autonomous community. Autonomy must be recognized by official Madrid and the international community, Aragones said.

- I'm making an inclusive proposal because it's for all Democrats - whether they are in favor of (Catalan) independence or not. And a proposal that meets international requirements, - he said during his speech in the Parliament of Catalonia.

Autonomy needs to apply the "law on the clarity of the referendum". He referred to the political experience of Canada and Quebec. Based on the experience of 2017, Catalonia cannot make a decision without the approval of the Spanish government.

“Even if someone does not like it, the reality is that today the vast majority of Catalans want to decide the future of the country by voting in a referendum,” the head of Catalonia stressed.

Recall that in October 2017, the autonomy, on the initiative of the Generalitat, headed by Carles Puigdemont, contrary to the authorities of the country and the decision of the Constitutional Court, held a referendum on independence. According to the results of the vote, Parliament declared independence. The turnout was 43%, 90% voted in favor.

At the end of last year, residents of Barcelona took to the streets of the city to protest against a court decision on compulsory 25% Spanish-language education in educational institutions in Catalonia.

Puigdemont was arrested in September 2021 - he has been a fugitive since 2017. He traveled from Brussels to Italy to meet with representatives of the Sardinian authorities and the Catalan Commissioner for Human Rights.
