Enemies divided gas fraternally: Israel and Lebanon resolved the dispute over deposits

Two countries at war with each other have found a compromise in a dispute over gas fields.

Israel and Lebanon set an excellent example for all other warring countries: despite the fact that they are officially at war, they still managed to come to a compromise on the maritime border. No wonder Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid called this agreement "historic", reports Reuters.

The announcement of an agreement on the delimitation of the Lebanese border with Israel has already begun and will take place on October 20. Negotiations on the definition of land and sea borders between the two warring states have been going on in the settlement of Naqoura in southern Lebanon for more than a quarter of a century - since 1996.

"This is a historic achievement that will bolster Israel's security, invest billions in its economy, and ensure the stability of our northern border," Lapid said.

For their part, the Lebanese authorities are also pleased, since the agreement is in the economic interests of Beirut. The country's president, Michel Aoun, noted that the demarcations preserve Lebanon's rights to natural resources.

Recall that the disputes between these two countries arose because of the reserves at the Karish and Qana gas field in the Mediterranean Sea, just where the sea border passes between them.

“Many of the outstanding disputes have been resolved and we hope that the final maritime boundary map will be completed in the coming days,” Aoun said .
