According to Kommersant , the resolution proposed by the European Union was adopted by an overwhelming majority, including the delegations of the EU, NATO, Brazil, a member of the BRICS, and Afghanistan, with which the Russian Federation had previously tried to actively cooperate.
“The document was supported by a record 143 countries. 5 states voted against it, including Russia itself, ”the message says.
In addition to the Russian Federation, this five included: Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua and Syria.
Another 45 countries, including India, South Africa, China, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, as well as Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, which are members of the CSTO along with the Russian Federation, abstained or avoided participating in the voting. The number of opponents of the actions of the Russian Federation in the UN has grown over the past six months. For example, Eritrea, which in March opposed the condemnation of the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, this time refused to participate in the vote. Russia wanted to make the process of adopting the document secret, but this proposal was rejected by the UN.
A two-thirds vote was enough to pass the document.
The reason for the adoption of the document condemning the actions of Russia was the annexation of four new territories to the Russian Federation: the LPR and the DPR, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. The countries that supported the resolution agreed that the referendums held in these territories were “illegal”, violating the principles of international law and encroaching on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The actions of the Russian Federation in relation to the Ukrainian lands in the UN called "annexation" and demanded the withdrawal of the Russian army from the territory of Ukraine.
The Russian delegation protested against the adoption of the document. However, the representative of the US delegation, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, called the resolution “the only right decision”: “Today Russia invaded Ukraine. The next time someone encroaches on your territory, what will you do, what will you expect from the UN? she asked.
