Deputies of the Duma of Chukotka and public figures of the region called for the complete cessation of the activities of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Parliamentarians and officials accused the organization of working against the interests of the Russian Federation, pointing to funding by “enemies of Russia”.

“In those subjects where WWF operates, under the guise of protecting nature, the organization strives in every possible way to create specially protected natural areas. In fact, the creation of such locations leads to the exclusion of land from the state under the guise of a boon for the animal world. In these territories, socio-economic activities are being stopped, and local residents are being deprived of land to lead a traditional way of life, ”the Duma of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug said in a press release .

According to Podyom , parliamentarians and officials were especially dissatisfied with the work of environmentalists on Wrangel Island, where the Russian military base is located. It is also noted that the border between Russia and the United States runs along the coast of Chukotka. The Speaker of the District Duma, Valentina Rudchenko, pointed to the financing of WWF by "enemies of Russia."

“In Chukotka, the activities of WWF threatened even more serious consequences for the country. They are especially interested in the maritime zone along the Arctic coast, including about. Wrangel and the Long Strait (separates the island from the mainland of Russia - approx. press service). Considering that this organization is funded by the enemies of Russia, it is easy to guess in whose interests it conducts its work, ”said Rudchenko , adding that the government and regional governor Roman Kopin supported the termination of the agreement with WWF unilaterally.

The Wildlife Fund told Rise that cooperation was terminated in the summer, but so far several projects have been operating in Chukotka. The organization clarified that they do not create protected natural areas, and only local authorities can make a decision on this.
