Also pardoned were former British Ambassador Vicki Bowman, Australian economist Sean Turnell (former adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi).
Aung San Suu Kyi led the National League for Democracy. This party was in opposition to the military junta that came to power in Myanmar. In addition, she was Myanmar's foreign minister and state adviser (a position corresponding to a prime minister) between 2016 and 2021.
In total, Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with at least 18 crimes, ranging from bribery to electoral fraud.
