Quentin Tarantino called the modern era of cinema one of the worst in the history of Hollywood

Only such unsuccessful decades for cinema as the 1950s and 1980s can be compared with the current one, the director believes.

In the new edition of his podcast The Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, Quentin Tarantino criticized the current cinema, according to Business Insider. “Despite the fact that the 80s was the time when I watched more films than ever before in my life - at least in terms of going to the cinema - it seems to me that the 80s, just like the 50s, the worst era in the history of Hollywood,” said Tarantino. “It can only be compared with the present moment, the current era”.

In the past, Tarantino has spoken out more than once about his opposition to major projects. In a 2020 interview with Deadline, he talked about how auteur filmmakers are waging war against studio franchises. “As far as I can tell, commercial product that is owned by conglomerates, projects that everyone knows about, whether it’s Marvel comics, Star Wars, Godzilla and James Bond, for these projects, the last year is always considered the most successful year.”

Tarantino told the Los Angeles Times this month that he has no intention of doing superhero films: “You have to be an employee to do this kind of stuff. I am not an employee. I'm not looking for a job." According to Tarantino, many filmmakers "can't wait for the day" when superhero films fall out of favor.

Tarantino is not the first to criticize this genre. Before him, for example, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola did it. In 2019, Scorsese told Empire magazine that Marvel films should be shown in amusement parks rather than theaters.
