Very curious developments are taking place after the US midterm elections, in which the Republican Party failed to achieve the expected victory over the Democratic Party.
And nowhere has the impact of the Republican Party's weak electoral performance been more evident than in the shift in Republicans' attitude towards former President Donald Trump, who announced his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election. The latest poll of influential publications Economist/YouGov gave sensational results. If before the election 60% of Republicans wanted Trump to run again in 2024, now only 47% think so - a drop of 13 percentage points happened in just over one week. Support
But that's not all. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis edged ahead of Donald Trump for the first time when Republicans were asked who should run for president in 2024. DeSantis was favored by 46% and Trump by 39%.
As for the Republicans in Congress, current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has also experienced a drop in his Republican rating. Shortly before the election, 37% of his party members had a favorable opinion of McConnell, while 50% had a negative opinion of him. A week after the election, the share of Republicans with a positive opinion fell even less than 32%, while the share of those with an unfavorable opinion rose by 8 points, to 58%.
