The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has announced that the operation of the hadron collider will be reduced by 20% next year.
“In light of the global energy crisis and rising prices, and as part of its social responsibility, CERN will implement measures that will significantly reduce the organization's energy consumption in 2022 and 2023,” CERN said.
Previously, the organization began to turn off street lighting at night, postponed the start of heating for a week and was going to “optimize” it throughout the winter. During peak hours, CERN consumes about a third of the energy needed to power Geneva, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The fact that the LHC will be turned off in order to save money became known in September. The early stop was agreed with the French company Electricite de France, which supplies electricity.
