French referee Stephanie Frappart (pictured) has been appointed chief referee of the match between Germany and Costa Rica. She will be the first female referee in the history of football to referee a game at the men's World Cup.

“Stephanie Frappart will be the first female referee in history to serve as the head referee at the men's World Cup”, - Forbes notes, citing a message from representatives of the International Football Federation (FIFA).

The Frenchwoman will referee the match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the teams of Costa Rica and Germany will meet in the third round of the group stage (Group E). The game is scheduled for December 1st and will take place at the El Bayt Stadium in El Howrah.

In Group E, a difficult situation has developed in which no team can count on guaranteed access to the playoffs. The leader of the group after two matches is the Spanish national team, which has four points. The teams of Costa Rica and Japan each have three points. Germany scored 1 point over two games.

As for Frappart, she is the leader in the ranking of women referees according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). In 2019, she officiated the UEFA Super Cup final, and in 2022, the French Cup final.
