The Oxford English Dictionary has named a word of the year that reflects the mood of the English-speaking audience over the past 12 months.

It became the phrase "goblin mode" - a slang expression meaning the encouragement of one's own desires, laziness, untidiness and greed with a refusal to conform to social norms and expectations.

This is stated in a post on Oxford University Press website.

As noted in the message, for the first time this expression appeared in social networks in 2009. It began to gain popularity in the period after the lifting of coronavirus restrictions. This phrase has been widely used since February of this year.

The expression is used to describe the mood of people who do not want to return to "normal life" after the pandemic and live up to unattainable standards. Often this phrase is used in the phrases "stay in goblin mode" or "go into goblin mode".

This year, residents were invited to vote for the word of the year. A total of 300,000 people took part in the voting. In addition to "goblin mode", the top three most popular words of this year were also the concepts of "metaverse" and the hashtag #IStandWith ("I support"). The hashtag is used in social networks to express solidarity in certain issues and events.
