Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo left under arrest for 18 months

According to El Tiempo , the prosecutor's request was found to be justified: on December 14, the supervisory authority requested 18 months of pre-trial detention for Castillo. Prosecutors fear he may escape. Before that, Castillo tried to apply for political asylum at the Mexican embassy in Lima.

Castillo has been the president of Peru since June last year, on December 7, 2022, he, as well as his wife and children, were detained by the police. Before that, Parliament had impeached him, despite the fact that Castillo had dissolved Parliament a few hours earlier. The impeachment was announced after Castillo announced major political changes in the republic.

After the arrest of Castillo, protests began in the country. The presidency was taken over by Vice President Dina Boluarte. Amid the riots, she proposed to postpone the elections to April 2024. On December 13, it became known about the death of seven people during the protests in Peru, and the next day the authorities declared a thirty-day state of emergency.
