After arriving in Washington, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky (pictured) met with US President Joe Biden, following which a press conference was held. Then the Ukrainian leader went to the US Congress to address representatives of both houses of parliament.

As Kommersant notes, in his speech, the President of Ukraine called on the United States to continue supporting Ukraine for the sake of the future of "our children and grandchildren". He said that 2023 will be a turning point in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and also thanked the Americans for the assistance provided.

Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv is not asking American soldiers to fight for Ukraine, noting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine "can perfectly control American tanks and planes". According to him, the funds received as part of financial assistance to Ukraine are not charity, but an investment in strengthening the global security architecture.

He stated that the United States cannot ignore the Ukrainian events in the context of global world integration, and "the ocean will not save" the United States from political and military cataclysms taking place in other parts of the planet. The Ukrainian president stressed that the only thing Ukrainians want for the New Year is victory.

“Waiting for steps towards peace from “terrorist regimes” is naive. The United States can accelerate the victory of Ukraine and prevent the destructive international activities of Iran and Russia”, - Kommersant quotes one of Zelensky’s theses in a speech in Congress.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine, the United States and its allies will "put in their place" all those who encroach on freedom and order in the world. According to Kommersant, the President of Ukraine deliberately used a play on words, saying the phrasal verb “Put in” in syllables, consonant with the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the end of his speech, the head of Ukraine presented the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi with a Ukrainian flag signed by servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Bakhmut. Pelosi responded by giving Zelensky an American flag raised over the Capitol in honor of the visit of the Ukrainian president.
