Pope Benedict XVI died in retirement. He held the throne of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013.
The death of the 96-year-old pontiff was announced by the Vatican. On December 28, there were reports of a serious deterioration in his health due to his advanced age; the condition was called "severe, but stable." The current Pope Francis urged Catholics to pray for his predecessor.
Benedict XVI (in the world of Joseph Ratzinger) abdicated the throne due to health problems in 2013. Benedict XVI was the 265th pope in a row and became the first head of the Vatican in 600 years to leave the post voluntarily.
The funeral of Benedict XVI will take place on January 5, 2023.
