Faezeh Hashemi-Rafsanjani, a former member of the Iranian parliament and a fighter for women's rights, was sentenced to five years in prison for calling for participation in anti-government protests. She was found guilty of actions against national security.

Faezeh Hashemi-Rafsanjani is the daughter of former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi—Rafsanjani, who led the country in 1989-1997. She was detained in September last year in Tehran.

Her lawyer Neda Shams told AFP about the verdict. He added that the defense intends to appeal the verdict.

Previously, the daughter of the former president has been sentenced to prison more than once for propaganda and dissemination of information discrediting statesmen.

Recall that protests in Iran began last fall after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was detained by the vice police for wearing the hijab incorrectly.

According to human rights activists, 517 demonstrators were killed during the protests in the country. Over 19.2 thousand protesters were detained by the police. The Associated Press notes that after the protests in the country, at least 16 people were sentenced to death. Four sentences were carried out.
