Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law on mandatory genomic registration, expanding the list of those who should be subjected to compulsory DNA collection.

The document was published on February 6 on the legal information portal.

According to TASS, previously, only those who were sentenced to imprisonment for serious or especially serious or for sexual crimes were required to donate DNA. In addition, unidentified persons whose biological material is seized during investigative actions and is necessary for their further identification were subject to genomic registration.

Now all persons sentenced to imprisonment, as well as suspects accused of committing crimes and persons subjected to administrative arrest are required to donate DNA.

If later it turns out that a person was brought to criminal or administrative responsibility illegally and at the same time had already taken DNA samples from him, then in case of the right to rehabilitation, he may demand the destruction of his genomic information.

The new version of the law will come into force 90 days after its official publication.
