Seismologists have recorded an intense earthquake of magnitude 5.5 in the Pacific Ocean near the Kuril Islands.

This is reported by Interfax with reference to the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The incident occurred at 8:57 Moscow time on February 13.

The epicenter was located 682 km east of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, 23 km south of the southwestern tip of Simushir Island.

Earlier, several more tremors of moderate intensity were recorded in the area.

The most destructive earthquake in the last 84 years from a series of aftershocks of magnitude up to 7.7 occurred on February 6-7 in Turkey. His victims were about 30 thousand people. Among the dead there are citizens of the Russian Federation, including children.

At the same time, the tremors were felt in Syria, where 8.5 thousand residents died under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The analysis of debris in seismically active areas continues with the participation of international rescue teams.
