"Human remains were found in the area of the settlement of Nelma in the southern part of the district, traces similar to tiger tracks were found nearby. A hunter, a resident of Sakhalin, was killed," the administration said (quoted by TASS).
It is noted that the deceased came to the settlement for further hunting. After he stopped contacting, relatives started looking for him. The press service of the SU IC of Russia for the Khabarovsk Territory and the Jewish Autonomous Region reported on the beginning of the verification of the circumstances of the death of a Sakhalin resident. It is noted that his remains were found in a remote area of hunting grounds.
The settlement of Nelma is located on the shore of the Tatar Strait at the mouth of the river of the same name. The district center Sovetskaya Gavan is located 180 km to the southwest. There is no land connection with Nelma, and you can get here by sea — in summer, by air — in winter. There is no permanent population in the settlement — there are several wintering grounds for hunters.
In the settlements of Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krai, cases of tiger attacks on domestic animals have become more frequent. According to TASS, since the beginning of the year they have killed more than 40 yard dogs. Residents of villages where tigers have begun to visit are afraid to go out in the dark. In this regard, Rosprirodnadzor authorized the capture of six tigers in five districts for further placement in a rehabilitation center or release into the wild away from populated areas.
