Rioters in Albania began storming the parliament

14 февраля 2023, 09:20
Hundreds of protesters in Tirana gathered outside the Albanian parliament building and attempted an assault. The police pushed them back.

This is reported by Interfax with reference to data from world news agencies.

The protesters had smoke bombs and flares in their hands, which they threw towards the security forces.

The initiator of the protests is called the opposition Democratic Party of the ex-president and ex-Prime Minister of the country Sali Berisha. The Democratic Party, which lost the 2021 elections, cannot accept the loss of power positions in the country.

The day before, an emergency occurred in the parliament building: oppositionists disrupted a meeting of the country's legislature and demanded the resignation of the government.

Rioters occupied the podium for speeches and whistled over the words of those who wanted to speak.

Among the claims of the opposition to the ruling Socialist Party and the 58-year-old Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, who has been heading the government since 2021, are indulgence in corruption and organized crime, falling living standards and lack of prospects, which is why young people leave Albania en masse and go to work in Western European states.

Recall that in 1997, the Socialist Party replaced the Democratic Party of Albania in power as a result of an acute political crisis that brought the country to the brink of civil war. In the 2005 elections, the Socialist Party lost its parliamentary majority and went into opposition. In 2021, the Socialist Party returned to power, winning elections and forming a government headed by former Foreign Minister, former member of the national basketball team Edi Rama.
