Almost 49% of Americans do not believe that the US government can be trusted on the issue of Chinese spy balloons.

According to surveys conducted by the global consulting company Redfield & Wilton Strategies commissioned by Newsweek, the majority of respondents believe that the balloon shot down on February 4 was sent from China and spied on the United States. On the other hand, the same percentage of Americans do not think that the White House is telling them the whole truth about what actually happened to the balloon and three other unidentified objects shot down over northern Canada, Alaska and Lake Huron. The doubts that have visited many Americans, sociologists believe, reflect the fact that the story around the Chinese balloon was "confused" by US Defense officials from the very beginning.

"If this is a serious threat, then why did the ground services allow the Chinese balloon to drift for a whole week across the continent?" the inhabitants ask themselves.

As it turned out, only 13% of respondents were not at all concerned about the presence of unidentified flying objects in American airspace. About 32% were extremely concerned about the incident, the rest were "a little worried".

Nevertheless, 64% of the surveyed citizens support the US decision to shoot down a suspicious balloon.

James A. Lewis, senior vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that the number of people who do not trust President Joe Biden's team regarding Chinese flying objects "actually corresponds to the percentage of Americans who believe in flying saucers."
