The document was supported by 141 countries, 32 States abstained.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on "the principles underlying a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine". The document calls on the Russian side to withdraw troops from Ukrainian territory "within its internationally recognized borders" (including from Crimea), as well as to stop attacks on critical infrastructure. The resolution was opposed by Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria, and Eritrea, among others.

The UN called on the member states of the organization, as well as international organizations, "to redouble support for diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter". The UN General Assembly also reaffirms its commitment to the unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. The resolution warns Russia against attacks on civilian objects in Ukraine, including residential buildings, schools and hospitals. The document, unlike the UN Security Council resolutions, is not binding.

Minsk, in turn, proposed amendments to the resolution. For example, the Belarusian side proposed to exclude from the document the call to withdraw troops, but to leave the call for the cessation of hostilities. Belarus intended to add a call to start peace talks and call on the UN to "refrain from sending weapons to the conflict zone".

The day before, we recall, a UN special session dedicated to the deployment of troops to Ukraine took place. UNGA Chairman Csaba Keresi, a Hungarian diplomat, addressed Moscow in Russian. He called her the most important member of the organization and called for a return to the "path of preserving peace" and "ending aggression." He expressed the opinion that "military decisions will not put an end to this war." UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called the prospects for peace in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict gloomy. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, stated that what is happening is a "war with the West for survival".

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special operation in Ukraine.

"I have decided to conduct a special military operation. We will strive to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine and bring to justice those who committed crimes against civilians", - the head of state announced.
