Rheinmetall manufactured these systems at a cost of $212 million specifically for Ukraine. Skynex will enter service with the Ukrainian army within a year, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing the words of the company's CEO Armin Papperger. It is curious that earlier the deadline for the delivery of Skynex complexes to Ukraine was only the beginning of 2024.
This system is capable of shooting down drones and cruise missiles and is used for short-range air defense. One of its advantages is considered to be fairly cheap ammunition.
The Skynex anti-aircraft artillery complex is a module with a 35 mm autocannon on a wheeled chassis, equipped with an X-band radar and an automated control system. The gun fires programmable AHEAD projectiles, the most effective for hitting small-sized air targets at a range of up to 4.5 km.
Skyranger is an armored version of the Skynex complex with a similar module and capabilities. Experts also report that the 35-mm gun can be replaced with a 30-mm, the range of which will be reduced to 3 km, but it is also possible to install two small-sized anti-aircraft missiles with a range of up to 9 km.
Last February, the AFU has already received from Germany two Gepard anti-aircraft guns and 6 thousand ammunition for them, as well as Biber bridge stackers, first aid kits, Zetros trucks and winter camouflage nets.
"In addition, the Lockheed arms company is opening another plant for the production of the HIMARS system, which, according to the Ukrainian military, has proven itself very well in combat. Their production will be increased from 48 to 96 pieces per year", - Reuters reports.
