In Belgium, on February 28, 56-year-old Genevieve Lermitt was euthanized, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her five children.

A resident of Belgium suffered from a serious mental disorder. She didn't realize it when she committed the murder in 2007. The children's father was away at the time. Genevieve Lermitt stabbed her son and four daughters, who were between three and 15 years old, according to the Brussels Times.

After the murder, the mother tried to commit suicide, but could not do it. She was detained. The jury sentenced her to life imprisonment. In 2019, she was placed from prison in a psychological clinic for treatment.

After the verdict, the lawyers of the convicted woman sued the psychiatrist for another ten years because he could not prevent the crime.

The lawyer of the convict said that the right to euthanasia was achieved after consultations with medical experts. Genevieve Lermitt died on February 28 on the day of the 16th anniversary of the death of her children.

According to the laws of Belgium in this country, it is possible to make euthanasia incurable patients and those who suffer mental suffering. However, the patient who requested such a procedure should be aware of his request at the time of the request.

RTE notes that over 2.9 thousand people died last year with the help of euthanasia in this country. They were mostly cancer patients. Three out of four of those who resorted to this procedure noted that they suffer not only physical, but also emotional suffering.
